STEAM HEATER

STEAM HEATER (LSE)

Special design made from thick copper sheet 175x100mm having filling tube with ebonite collar, steam vent & vertical tube terminating in chute passing through the side of vessel. A brass tube sliding fits into the central tube to carry thermometer. Lower end cut an angle to seal the chute.

A set of 5 different material rods of size 250x3mm of copper, brass, aluminium, iron, & borosilicate glass. Set consists of 8 rods each packed in cardboard box.

INGEN HAUZE APPARATUS

INGEN HAUZE APPARATUS (LSE)

Consists of a metal tank 150x90x100mm has five apertures on one side through which 100x3mm metal rods of copper, brass, aluminium, iron & glass pass. The outer end of each rod has a cavity. When the low melting point paraffin wax is placed in the cavity, the different metals melt the paraffin at different rates.

INGEN HAUZE APPARATUS (LSE)

Comprising six equal rods of copper, iron, lead, brass, zinc and aluminium, each 130x3mm dia., mounted in corks with their lower ends in a tank 210x75x75mm. The tank is supported on four legs at a height of approx. 170mm above the bench. In use, the rods are lightly coated with paraffin wax and the rates of melting compared.

LEE’S THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY APPARATUS (LSE)

For determining the relative conductivity of bad conductor material. Consists of a cylindrical slab of brass 115mm in diameter & 12mm thick drilled to take thermometer. On this rests a 50mm deep steam chest of the same diameter with inlet & outlet tubes for steam. The apparatus is suspended by strings attached to the lower end of the cylinder with thermometer. On retort stand with rectangular base 200x125mm & rod 600mm long. Complete with one each disc specimens, glass & plastic 3mm & 1.5mm thick respectively. For determining the conductivity of liquids.

To show force of contraction or expansion. A heavy cast iron base with 4 uprights, on one end of which is fitted a hand nut, the other drilled with holes to carry a cast iron rod of 75x6mm size bearing against narrow flats, overall size 330x60x60mm with 12 cast iron breaking rods.

CONSTANT PRESSURE AIR THERMOMETER (LSE)

Consists of a polished teakwood stand approx. 750mm high. A reservoir bulb sliding on vertical clamping rod. A detachable air thermometer bulb 70mm dia. connected via 3 way stopcock to U tube with wide bore left hand limb graduated 0.60x0.2ml & sliding indicator on right hand limb to obtain level. Base of U tube connected by rubber tubing to reservoir bulb. A metal vessel surrounding the bulb supported by a detachable metal shelf mounted on insulated asbestos screen mounted on the stand with a deep tray, supplied complete with 1 meter of rubber pressure tubing for connecting the reservoir to the tube.

DULONG & PETIT APPARATUS

DULONG & PETIT APPARATUS (LSE)

For determination of coefficient of absolute expansion of mercury. Modified form. Consists of columns surrounded by a glass jacket approx. 460x25mm closed by rubber bungs & fitted with inlet & outlet tubes for steam & cold water respectively. The lower ends of the tubes are bent & are connected horizontally. The upper open ends of the vertical limbs are bent so as to be placed side by side against a silvered glass scale 0-12cm figured every 2cm. The whole apparatus is mounted on a wooden stand by means of spring clips. All the glass parts are easily removable.

Comprising an iron flywheel 115mm diameter, mass 1.2 kg, mounted in cast brackets with nylon bearings. The shaft has an aluminium V-pulley 44mm diameter for driving with the spring belt. Dimensions of base 155x105mm approx.

HERO'S ENGINE (EOLIPILE) (LSE)

A functional glass model of the earliest form of steam turbine. Comprising a borosilicate glass bulb 70mm dia. approx., with side arms bent at right angles and formed into jets at their tips. The bulb is carried upon a metal stand, which leaves it free to rotate about its horizontal axis. If about 25 to 30ml of water are introduced into the bulb and boiled the issuing steam causes rapid rotation. Supplied without burner.
